Review – The Library of the Unwritten

Hey Book Lovers!

Thank you to Titan Books for sending me a copy of this book to review.

I knew I had to read this when I heard it was about a Library in Hell.

Title: The Library of the Unwritten

Author: A. j. Hackwith

Publisher: Titan Books UK

Release Date: 11 February

Pages: 448

Synopsis:Every book left unfinished by its author is filed away in the Unwritten Wing, a neutral space in Hell presided over by Claire, its head librarian. Along with repairing and organizing books, her job consists of keeping an eye on restless stories whose characters risk materialising and escaping the library.

When a Hero escapes from his book and goes in search of his author, Claire must track and capture him with the help of former muse and current assistant Brevity and nervous demon courier Leto. But what should have been a simple retrieval goes horrifyingly wrong, in a chase that threatens to reshape the boundaries between Heaven, Hell… and Earth.

My Rating: 4/5

The story was entertaining but not perfect. I found it was written really well and it was easy to read. The pacing was a little strange in places but that might just be me. I loved the world-building and seeing the different worlds.  I liked the differences between heaven, hell and Earth. The library of the unwritten books in hell was good and I liked the idea that the books wanted to be written and would escape. The characters are sent to look for the Devils bible both heaven and hell want it.

I enjoyed how each chapter starts with a little section of a library log from a past librarian. It made the world feel larger and I enjoyed seeing the different librarians. The rules of the library were another good part of the book and I liked the mystery of what happened to Gregor the previous librarian.

The Characters
I will lost a few of the main characters and my thoughts on them. I enjoyed most of the characters and I wish we got to see more of certain characters and their backgrounds.

Claire Hadley – She is the strict and tough librarian of Hells Unwritten Wing. She is pansexual and has a skirt with many pockets. She herself has books in the unwritten wing. She isn’t easy to like at first but she grew on me a little. I still wouldn’t say I liked her though.

Brevity – She is a muse and sort of a best friend to Claire. I liked her and I wish she was around more.

Leto – Demon in hell that isn’t all that he seems. I liked him too and his story was interesting.

Remiel – Fallen Angel that was made before the fall. Wants to get back into heaven and is sent to search for the Devils bible. I liked Ramiel and I would love to know more of his story.

Andras – He is a demon and Hells Arcanist. He mentored Claire and she trusts him.

Hero – Escaped from a book. He destroys part of his book so has to stick around and he helps of the others although he doesn’t like Claire.

Overall I did enjoy reading this book and I loved the world but there were just a few things that stopped me from giving it 5 stars.

Thanks for Reading!

Lucy
